Bulgari is Wild Pop: and the '80s are back

A huge party filled Rome's Stadio dei Marmi sports stadium to celebrate the presentation of Bulgari's new "Wild Pop" collection. Audacious and colourful among artisans and coloured stones: the collection pays homage to the glam side of the '80s with their legends and protagonists, particularly the music of David Bowie and the art of Andy Warhol.

Inspiration came to Bulgari's creative director, Lucia Silvestri, while she was visiting the Andy Warhol Foundation in New York and browsing the Italian company's catalogues kept in the Foundation's archives. Dialogue between Bulgari and Warhol was therefore the starting point of the collection: in fact, during the 1980s, Nicola Bulgari was living in the Big Apple where he met the artist who had always been a great admirer of the famous Haute Joaillerie brand's collections.

“A jewel should be worn to flaunt its beauty," the Creative Director said while presenting some items from the collection, such as the Queen of Pop platinum necklace adorned with a 24 carat sapphire, 80 carats of baguette diamonds, green tourmalines and sapphires, and Magnificent Green Ruffles (with a 34.12 carat emerald set into the centre). “I put the stones onto wax tablets and mix them up: colours, shapes, dimensions... I look for harmony and when I find it, I call the designer because, for Bulgari, it is the design that links the preciousness of the stones,“ she continues. And so creations of inimitable fascination among sapphires, rubellites, diamonds, white gold and platinum begin to take shape.

But Wild Pop is not just 1980's culture. It is a universe of wonder and transgression, with provocative pieces like those dedicated to the Berlin wall and to marijuana. A tribute to an age marked by the insatiable desire for “everything at once”, celebrated with an exclusive party whose guests included numerous well-known faces from the worlds of fashion and entertainment, such as actress Eva Green, top model Bella Hadid and Duran Duran, who played in concert.
