JAPAN AKOYA PEARLS - History, Quality and Sustainability

The purpose of this seminar is to promote the attractiveness of Japanese akoya cultured pearls to the global market in line with the release of the revised version of “Pearl Standard (Pearl Standard 2025)” to be prepared by the Japan Pearl Promotion Society.

The seminar’s first theme, “History”, explains how Akoya cultured pearls, invented in Japan from the late 19th to early 20th century, gained acceptance in the established natural pearl market.

The second section, “Quality”, describes the production volume and attractiveness of Akoya cultured pearls, as well as the treatment techniques represented by “Maeshori”, “Breaching” and “Choshoku”.

In the final theme, “Sustainability”, outlined the pearl’s lifecycle, the three pillars of sustainability, and current challenges and initiatives.

The craftsmanship underpinning Japanese manufacturing has always been driven by artisans’ dedication to their work and pursuit of beauty in their creations. This spirit of quality pursuit is also inherited in Akoya pearl cultivation.

Moreover, this “craftsmanship” is deeply rooted in traditional Japanese values of “coexistence with nature” based on Shinto and Buddhism. This resonates with the Italian craftsmanship ethos; creating products of outstanding quality through traditional techniques and contemporary sensibilities.
