Legends of Precious Stones: Myths and Folklore from Around the World

Precious stones, with their kaleidoscopic beauty and mysterious charm, have fascinated humanity since the dawn of time. Every culture has told stories and legends about gems, attributing to them symbolic meanings and magical powers.

In ancient Egypt, lapis lazuli was considered the stone of truth and wisdom. It was believed to be associated with the goddess of truth, Maat, and to bring mental clarity and protection against evil forces.

In ancient Greece, pearls were considered the tears of the gods, symbols of purity and love. It was said that pearls were created from drops of dew that fell into the sea and that Venus, the goddess of love, had transformed them to adorn herself.

In India, the diamond has been venerated for centuries as the “stone of kings.” According to legend, diamonds were the solidified tears of the gods and were believed to possess protective powers and bring good fortune.

The ruby, in Burma, on the other hand, was venerated as the “king of precious stones,” attributed with protective powers and believed to give the wearer unmatched strength and courage.

In Celtic folklore, amber was associated with the sun and healing. It was said that amber stones were the tears of the Sun god, fallen to earth and transformed into gems.

For the ancient Incas, emeralds were associated with the goddess of fertility and the Earth, Pachamama, and they believed they ensured fertility and prosperity.

According to a Navajo legend, turquoise was a true piece of fallen sky, a divine gift to humanity.

In Japan, opal was considered the “stone of dreams,” believed to contain the power of ancestral spirits and capable of connecting the wearer to the spirit world.

Medieval Europe was also rich in legends linked to precious stones. Aquamarine, for example, was considered the “stone of sailors” and was believed to protect seafarers from the dangers of the sea.

These legends show us that precious stones are not only objects of beauty, but also bearers of ancient stories and legends that connect us to the past and inspire us with their eternal charm.
