How to Properly Care for Pearl Jewellery

Among all the gemstones used in high jewellery, pearls hold a unique position. They are an organic material, alive in their structure, and extremely sensitive to both environmental conditions and daily wear. Improper storage can irreversibly compromise their luster, orient, and surface integrity. For this reason, pearl jewellery requires more rigorous care protocols than mineral gemstones.

The first critical factor is hydration. Nacre contains a natural percentage of water and tends to dehydrate in excessively dry environments. Airtight safes, aggressive air conditioning, or long periods of disuse can lead to dullness and micro-cracking. Ideally, pearls should be stored in an environment with moderate humidity, avoiding completely sealed containers for extended periods.

Equally important is protection from chemical agents. Perfumes, hairsprays, creams, make-up, and acidic perspiration can gradually erode the surface of the pearl. In professional practice, the rule is always “last on, first off”: pearls should be the last item worn and the first removed. After each use, it is advisable to gently wipe their surface with a soft, clean cloth to remove any residue.

From a physical standpoint, pearl jewellery should be stored separately from diamonds and other hard stones. Nacre is relatively soft and can be easily scratched through contact. The correct method involves using a soft fabric pouch or a dedicated, lined compartment within a jewellery box.

Particular attention should be given to necklaces strung on silk thread. With wear, the thread absorbs moisture, cosmetics, and mechanical stress. In professional settings, periodic restringing is recommended every 12 to 24 months if the necklace is worn regularly, or whenever loosening between the pearls becomes noticeable.

For cleaning, it is essential to avoid ultrasonic cleaners, steam, and harsh detergents. The only safe method is a slightly damp cloth, followed by natural air drying away from heat sources.

When properly cared for, pearls can retain their beauty for generations. However, more than any other gemstone, they require constant attention and mindful handling, in keeping with their delicate and precious nature.
